Privacy policy
This policy explains how Opengates Africa Ltd (“OpenGates Africa”, “we”, “us”) uses personal information when you visit opengatesafricaconferences.com, contact us, or register for a seat or your interest in our events. We keep this site simple, so we collect very little.
1. Who we are
Opengates Africa Ltd is a company registered in England and Wales (company number 11822130), based in London, United Kingdom. We are the “controller” of the personal information described here, which means we decide how and why it is used.
You can contact us about anything in this policy at info@opengatesafricaconferences.com.
2. What information we collect
- Information you give us. If you use the contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address, the topic you are interested in, your message, and anything else you choose to tell us.
- Seat registration. If you register for a seat at our first conference, we receive your name, email address, organisation, job title, country, how you are interested in taking part (attendee, sponsor, speaker, exhibitor or consulting), any optional message, and a record of your consent. Registration is an expression of interest only: we take no payment and a place is not guaranteed.
- Technical information. Like any website, our hosting provider automatically records technical data when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, the pages requested and the date and time. We use it only to keep the site secure and working.
We do not use advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not use tracking tools on this site. Fonts and images are served from our own site. The site does not ask you to create an account.
3. How and why we use it
| What we do | Our legal basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|
| Reply to your enquiry and discuss events, consulting or partnerships with you | Our legitimate interests in running our business and responding to people who contact us, or taking steps at your request before a contract |
| Process your seat registration or interest in our first conference, and email you about dates, venue, confirmations and updates | Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time |
| Keep the site secure, prevent abuse and fix problems | Our legitimate interests in protecting our website and business |
| Keep records we are legally required to keep (for example accounting records) | Legal obligation |
We will not send you marketing emails unless you have asked to hear from us, and you can unsubscribe at any time. We do not sell your personal information.
4. Who we share it with
We share information only with service providers who help us run the site and our email, acting on our instructions:
- Website hosting and form handling, which receives contact form and seat registration submissions and server logs.
- Email provider, which stores the emails we send and receive at info@opengatesafricaconferences.com.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights. If we ever add a new provider that receives your information, we will update this policy.
5. Transfers outside the UK
Some of our service providers may process information outside the UK, for example in the European Economic Area or the United States. Where they do, we rely on safeguards required by UK law, such as an adequacy decision or the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
6. How long we keep it
We keep enquiry emails and contact form messages only for as long as we need them to deal with your enquiry and any resulting relationship, and normally for no longer than 24 months after our last contact, unless the law requires us to keep records for longer. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a short period. If you register for a seat or your interest in events, we keep your details until you ask us to stop.
7. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct anything that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your information;
- ask us to restrict how we use it, or object to our use of it;
- ask for your information in a portable format, where it applies;
- withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on it.
To use any of these rights, email info@opengatesafricaconferences.com. We will reply within one month. We may need to check your identity first.
8. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we use your information, please contact us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
9. Other websites
Our site links to our LinkedIn page and to Unsplash photographers’ pages. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for how they use your information.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top shows when it last changed.
